Green School Newsletter
St. Joseph’s N.S. Woodford
March 2016

Hi Everyone,
The Green School’s Committee is back with our first newsletter of 2016. We are making progress with our latest theme ‘Global Citizenship – Litter and Waste’.

Mark Molloy from Galway County Council called to the school on Thursday 28th January to discuss how we are all global citizens. Therefore, as global citizens we have both rights and responsibilities. One of our most important responsibilities is to protect the environment. He will continue working with us during the year to help us progress towards our 6th Green flag.

In order to really promote the ‘Global Citizenship – Litter and Waste’ theme within the school, we recently took part in Fairtrade Fortnight. On Thursday 3rd March 2016 the Green Schools committee organized a Fair Trade Day. The committee made a special presentation to the whole school to inform the children of the event during Assembly. We set up a stand and organized lots of fun activities to inform and promote awareness children and parents about Fair Trade.

Fair Trade Day

We hope to organize a CLEAN UP Day in the coming months in collaboration with An Taisce’s National Spring Clean. The children will organize a clean-up around the school. Parents will also be welcome to help with this day. It would be hoped that having a CLEAN UP Day during the school year will encourage more people to dispose of their waste correctly. We will let you know more about this day closer to the time!

Our School’s Green Code

In our school,                                                       In our school,
If you want to be cool,                                         If you want to be cool,
Water is precious, don’t waste a drop.                Walk, cycle or car pool to school.
Biodiversity:                                                        Global Citizenship:

If you want to be cool,                                         If you want to be cool,
Take care of all the creatures.                               Be fair to the planet.
Remember:
We continue to use the hazardous boxes in school, so please continue to bring in your used batteries.
Remember not to throw litter around because we want to keep the school grounds clean. Remember also to use the correct bins for your rubbish.
Along with keeping the school clean we must also keep in mind our most recent themes of ‘Energy Conservation’ and ‘Water Conservation’. Remember to turn of taps, lights and any other electrical appliances when not in use.

In other news!
Some children from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class took part in the Credit Union table quiz in Loughrea on Saturday 30th January. Congratulations to everyone who took part!

In order to promote awareness of water conservation, we held a Poster competition in the school. Students had to design a poster on the theme ‘Be Water Smart’.

Remember our motto:

Look After Your Environment and Provide Enjoyment.

Fair Trade Day

   Fair Trade Day

On the 3rd of March 2016, St. Joseph's N.S. held an event called Fair Trade Day. Fair trade is when farmers grow their crops e.g. cocoa, tea leaves and coffee beans using the natural organic environment in an environmentally friendly way without using pesticides. Most fair trade products are not processed in factories. During this event the Green School Team teaches other pupils about this. We had a great day and we raffled a fair trade Easter egg. Thomas Gorman won it.
